I got these for my husband for Christmas. He's in a metal band and these were exactly what he needed to complete his "look". He thinks they're awesome and totally bad*ss. I was a little surprised to discover they aren't made of leather, which was a disappointment, given the price (which is very reasonable for leather, not so much for man-made materials). Still, finding any cool-looking boots in a size 14 is a major score so I'm not going to complain. They look pretty rugged--I just hope they last. It took a bit of adjusting to fit them properly to his legs, but the ties and buckles make this relatively easy. Once they're adjusted, they are very comfortable and wearable for hours. The side zipper makes getting in and out of the boots a snap. Delivery and transaction handling was satisfactory and pretty much what I expected.

I got these boots for my son for his 17th birthday. He absolutely loves them. The weather here (Johannesburg, South Africa) is getting warmer and it is time for flip-flops and shorts, but he still wears his boots. The dogs have also not been able to chew them to pieces, so I see these as a huge cost saving :-).

OK... I've purchased 3 pair already and due to a cobbler mistake, I'll now have to purchase another pair to replace the one they ruined.
So, here we go...
"From the factory" these boots leave much to be desired, but if you don't mind spending a little more money than the purchase price - when you get them home and prior to wearing them regularly, here's what you do...
01) Go to Tandy's Leather and purchase 10 good quality buckles to replace the ones that come on the boots. The original buckles are junk and you'll end up having to replace at least one relatively quickly (probably several). The only caveat is that the new buckles won't have 'strap holders', so the straps will be loose/flapping (but this is ok with me). So, take these new buckles and either immediately replace the original ones yourself or to a cobbler to let them do it for you. Besides, the heavier buckles will add to the 'look' of the boot! ;-p
02) While at Tandy's, you will probably want to pick up one of their shortest boot zippers (20" I think), just in case yours goes bad in the future and the shoe repair place doesn't have any. I have only had problems with the zippers if I had them laced too tight and putting them on stretched them (user error).
03) If you wear them regularly, over a period of time - you'll find that the ball of the foot will indent directly behind the steel-toe cap. So, save yourself some trouble later and get a good foot insole as well as some 'gel pads' that fit the ball of the foot and put them in early. You can add these (and probably will) after you've wore them for a while anyway. The good news is that the boots will probably be a little big anyway (1/2 size or so). So these will help the fit a little better as well.
04) If it is available in your area (call around) - get a LONG steel boot spoon (plastic ones will break). Although the metal spoon will probably bend early on - that's ok, it will still continue to work well and you'll be glad you have it.
05) Be careful not to over-tighten the laces and straps from the ankle down. If you do, you'll have a tendency to break the zipper down low. But not so loose that they slip around. (See 02 above)
06) Last, but not least... You'll find that the tongue of the boot is designed to be 'over-laid' with the flap on the back zipper to aid in stopping leaks if you step in high water. This was a good design except... You will notice the bottom of the tongue stops short to the bottom of the zipper about 3 inches. So naturally, if you step in high water, this area of missing 'flap-over' will get soaked inside the boot instantly (and I mean instantly). So while you're at the cobbler, have them sew in a small piece of leather to extend the tongue down the zipper and at the bottom - sew this new piece to the bottom of the flap on the opposite side to assist in almost eliminating leakage during short intervals on high water.
Now I realize this is lot (approximately another $100.00 parts and labor). But if you do these things - you'll have a GREAT pair of durable boots that will be comfortable and reliable for quite a long time.
Naturally, I cannot guarantee that after you've done all this that you won't have any problems at all. I can only say - that after several pair (I keep 2 in stock in case I want a dress pair and/or something ever happens to the 'everyday wear' pair) - As I stated above, I'm about to purchase another pair and am extremely pleased with them after all mods stated above (and if I can find a good cobbler in my new area).
So, buyer beware. At least now you know and if you do purchase a pair (or another one), you won't be surprised when the buckles begin to break and when they start hurting the ball of your foot. You will spend ultimately more money on them if you wear them regularly and often - so just 'bite the bullet' if you do purchase a pair and 'fix them right' up front.
Every 'now and then' use - well, they'll probably be just fine with no modifications (except the buckles - they will break).
Hopefully this helps in deciding whether to purchase a pair or not. As for me - here comes another pair - and not at fault of the boot (after mods).
And if you're the manufacturer - fix these issues and sell them for a little more for a GREAT pair of boots instead of low quality junk they are initially from your factory (China maybe?).
